David and Jonathan
1 Samuel 20
From his hiding place David sent a message to Jonathan : " Why does your father want to kill me ? "
" What do you want me to do ? " asked Jonathan
" Can we plan some way in which you can tell me what the king does without anyone knowing ? "
" Yes " said Jonathan
So David went away to hide from Saul, Jonathan watched him till he was out of sight.
David the Refugee
1 Samuel 21-22
David fled to a city of priests where he was met by Ahimelech.
He escaped into the wildderness
Doeg, one of Saul"s bodyguard, saw him. Doeg told Saul that Ahimelech had helped David, and at Saul's command, he attacked and killed Ahimelech's whole clan. Only one son esacaped to tell David of the massacre.
Saul set out in pursuit of David. While David was hiding in the depths of a long dark cave on one occasion, Saul entered it, but David did not kill Saul.
Saul madness returned and again he hunted David. One night when Saul was asleep, David and a friend took Saul's spear and water-jug.
Next morning David shouted down to Saul's camp from the top of a hill: " Where are the king's spear and water jug ? "
The End of King Saul
1 Samuel 28;31
While Saul was hunting for David in the deserts and the mountains, Samuel died and was mourned by all Israel.
David Becomes King
2 Samuel 1-4; 5,1 - 5
Three days after the battle of Mount Gibbon, an Amalekite brought David news of the disaster that had beffalen Israel. He carried with him Saul's crown and armlet.
Judah, David's own tribe, immediately anointed him king over them, but Abner, Saul's commander-in-chief, remained faithful to his old master's family and made Ishbosheth, Saul's son, king of the other eleven tribes.
The end came for Ishboseth when Abner married a woman hwo had been on e of Saul's wife.
Ishbosheth was stabbed by Abner's messenger. With Ishbosheth dead, David had no rival for the throne of Israel.
David and Bathsheba
2 Samuel 5-12
David's reign was glorious one of continuous victories againts the Philistines and other enemies of Israel.
David was great and a good king.
But however good, he sinned. One day, from the roof of his place he saw a woman so beautiful that instantly fell in love with her. He learned that she called Bathsheba, and that her husband, Uriah, was in his army besieging the town of Rabbah.
So he wrote a letter to Joab commanding him to place Uriah at a spot where he knew the men of Rabbah would resist more strongly. Uriah was killed.
Then David married her. One of their son was Solomon.
David and Absalom
2 Samuel 13-18
Absalom, one of David's sons proclaimed himself king of Israel at Hebron.
Absalom marched triumphantly into Jerusalem with his followers. David had the breathing-space he needed to organize his forces, and by the time Absalom and hi s army were ready to attack, the royalist troops were prepared.
The struggle took place in a wild forest and resulted in over whelming victory for David's men.
David told his commanders that. whatever happened that day, they were to deal kindly with his son.
Two messengers run to David. The first told him the joyful news that the battle had been won. The second told David that Absalom was dead.
